  • Fixing on the next horizon, but wait?

    By justateen | December 7, 2007

Had time on my hands today, so I had a look at my next possible peak to climb, a BA in English or Linguistics with OU, just for the added security later on. Had a look around, but they don’t do proper linguistics, English sounds very basic and the only thing that did interest me was a course in Modern languages with a 2/3 Spanish component. But, what I realised looking at it is that it will be just really boring after the PhD, like doing school work. And then it dawned on me, actually the PhD will be the end, my end of formal academic learning. There are no other courses beyond that, no other qualifications that I need, which would give me added security. Ok, I want to learn Spanish, but I won’t need a piece of paper and I can learn it my way, same with other things. So really, I can see the end of it all, the PhD, the working hard, the studying, it will end, and soon. Maybe I’ll need another 2 years, 3 years at max. I have been in education and constantly working very hard at all sorts of qualifications since I was 7, that’s nearly 30 years. It will just be completely and utterly weird to stop! And stop for good and so soon. Feels like a miracle really. I could just be messing about and not serious for forever thereafter. Like I said, a miracle.

    Data analysis: Attride-Sterling 2001

    By justateen | December 7, 2007

Attride-Sterling, J. (2001) Thematic networks: an analytic tool for qualitative research. Qualitative Research 1, pp. 385-405 This is an earlier paper and nowhere near as rigorous as the one by Braun and Clarke. The idea of a thematic network means to me having a visual representation, a spidergram of your themes so you can analyse it easier. What I am wondering is whether I may synthesis codes to quickly, i.e. have  a tendency to go to higher order codes very quickly as this is how I think. So I will need to be careful when coding to start with basics first and not go too abstract too quickly. And also, my criteria for what is important in the text and what I am looking for is about what helped the project. What in this email dialogue was recurrent and important to the development of the project. Otherwise nothing new, which is quite reassuring.

    Breast Cancer Awareness Month

    By justateen | December 6, 2007

This month we take a look at a subject that although many of us don’t like to think about, is never the less something we should all think about because it might just save your life. Consider these facts if you don’t believe us:

An estimated 211,300 new invasive cases of breast cancer are expected to occur among women in the United States during 2003.

An estimated 39,800 women will die from breast cancer.

It is estimated that 1,300 men will be diagnosed and 400 men will die of breast cancer during 2003.

Breast cancer is the leading cancer site among American women and is second only to lung cancer in cancer deaths.

Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among women ages 40-59.

Early detection and research are keys to the on going battle against these figures. Below you’ll find information and articles on the subjects that might just save your life oneday.

    General whereabouts

    By justateen | December 5, 2007

Rod is now off to sunny and hot Greece, while I am here in sunny and crisp Manchester. Have done a bit of work updating stuff. Have now also taken off comment function for posts. However, I am assuming this is strictly retrospectively and I will therefore still get loads of spam on the old posts. At least I can delete it all at once rather than, rather than look through them so see if there is one from Rod. It’s just too frustrating.

Also frustrated about the CCBill incompatibility with the banking system. That is really disappointing. I may just leave all the finances to Rod to administer and cease checking. Maybe that will help keeping my focus on improving the site regardless of what might financial reward might be coming my way. Long term I now see what Rod meant: Of course it will work as long as we don’t get penalised by google. The rest is just time and keeping up the good work. Will probably do more tonight…

Other internet research projects: Papadaki and Scott 2005

    By justateen | December 5, 2007

Papadaki, A., Scott, J. (2005) The Mediterranean Eating in Scotland Experience project: evaluation of an Internet-based intervention promoting the Mediterranean diet. British Journal of Nutrition 94, pp. 290-298 It was great getting the email from Alina and some extra stuff to read from her. This paper is much more about the nitty gritty of statistics, nutrition and quasi experiments. What is interesting is that Papadaki describes the other interventions much more, which are used in conjunction with the web site such as tailored email feedback and reminders to use the web site. ‘Internet education and tailored dietary and psychosocial feedback led to more favourable dietary changes towards the traditional Mediterranean diet at 6 months compared with general healthy-eating information and minimally tailored dietary feedback.’ (p. 294) I guess this suggests to me also that maybe some more interactive, ‘tailored’ interventions or options would be great for the effectiveness of our site at some point. Maybe we could write a ’safer sex quiz’?

Papadaki also found that the internet technology enhanced the tailored feedback and tailoring the feed back to individual participants’ needs  seemed to work better than the computer generated feedback in other studies. That’s obviously not surprising, having that kind of 1:1 support is motivating. I guess we are doing that in a very limited way with our email answer system. Again, would be great if we could find a way of suing this knowledge in some way. Otherwise the paper doesn’t say a lot about the web site, so not really our topic strictly speaking, excellent references though!
