Other internet research projects: Papadaki and Scott 2005

Papadaki, A., Scott, J. (2005) The Mediterranean Eating in Scotland Experience project: evaluation of an Internet-based intervention promoting the Mediterranean diet. British Journal of Nutrition 94, pp. 290-298 It was great getting the email from Alina and some extra stuff to read from her. This paper is much more about the nitty gritty of statistics, nutrition and quasi experiments. What is interesting is that Papadaki describes the other interventions much more, which are used in conjunction with the web site such as tailored email feedback and reminders to use the web site. ‘Internet education and tailored dietary and psychosocial feedback led to more favourable dietary changes towards the traditional Mediterranean diet at 6 months compared with general healthy-eating information and minimally tailored dietary feedback.’ (p. 294) I guess this suggests to me also that maybe some more interactive, ‘tailored’ interventions or options would be great for the effectiveness of our site at some point. Maybe we could write a ’safer sex quiz’?
Papadaki also found that the internet technology enhanced the tailored feedback and tailoring the feed back to individual participants’ needs seemed to work better than the computer generated feedback in other studies. That’s obviously not surprising, having that kind of 1:1 support is motivating. I guess we are doing that in a very limited way with our email answer system. Again, would be great if we could find a way of suing this knowledge in some way. Otherwise the paper doesn’t say a lot about the web site, so not really our topic strictly speaking, excellent references though!
